Twilight is Box Office powerhouse!

The power of the teen-tween audience cannot be denied!

As little as a week ago, forecasters were estimating that Twilight would bring in $45-60M in its opening weekend. Those guesses have proven to be way low as the teen vampire romance stormed the box office with a stunning haul of $70.5M. As you might expect, plans are already underway for multiple sequels. Quantum of Solace slumped badly in its second weekend ($27.4M/$109.4M) but still managed to edge newbie Bolt ($27M). Madagascar 2 ($16M/$137.4M) and Role Models ($7.2M/$48M) rounded out the top 5.

Top 10 holiday stocking stuffers for tweens!

According to suite101, the top 10 “stocking stuffers” for tweens this holiday seasons is a mix of gadgets, accessories and “High School Musical” related items. It seems they forgot to mention stuff related to “Twilight”—unless the book series or books counts. Jewelry is still in the top 10 as well as “favorite foods”. Anyways, here’s their list for stucking stuffers for tweens:

Anything High School Musical Related

High School Musical accessories seem to be topping the charts with tweens between the ages of 9 to 12. These popular items can range from watches to hair accessories. There are even mini digital cameras that would fit just perfect into a stocking.
Text and Chatting Devices
Text and chat toys are all the rage with this age group of young ladies. The devices allow tweens to communicate with friends who have the same device as long as they are within a certain area. There are no monthly fees or service plans required. These devices are the modern day walkie-talkie.

Computer Flash Drives

Collectible flash drives have now become a hit with tweens. Since many kids now operate computers on a daily basis, these cute flash drives can be very convenient. They come in many different shapes and sizes, such as animals and other fun shapes.

Makeup Sets

Makeup sets are always a hit in this age group. You can choose from beginner makeup kits or simple lip gloss and eye shadow sets. Many companies now make these sets in very light colors just for this group of young ladies. Add makeup remover products for an extra special touch.

Winter Accessories

Winter accessories are also very popular this holiday season. As a parent, you can kill two birds with one stone by placing stocking caps and gloves into the Christmas stocking this year. Funky scarves and gloves without fingertips seem to the big hits this winter season.

Jewelry

Jewelry can be another great gift for tween girls. As they are beginning to mature, jewelry will become a must-have item. This could be the perfect opportunity to give your daughter her first piece of real jewelry or maybe a purity ring. Of course, you can always go with jewelry kits, as girls this age still like making their own jewelry by hand.

Book Sets and Book Series

Books are always a hit with girls in this age group. Many new series are available on the market, or you may want to hunt down a classic set like the Babysitters Club. You can buy many of the more popular books in book bag size, so they will fit easily into a stocking as a gift. Consider the length of the books you buy and make sure they are appropriate for your child's reading level to make reading more enjoyable.

Bath Sets

Bath sets are yet another must have for tweens who are starting to pay close attention to appearance and style. Many sets will have everything needed for a spa-like bath setting. However, there are sets for hair care, bathing, and also cologne available this year.

Diary and Stationery

Diaries and stationary sets can also be a good choice for girls between the ages of 9 to 12. This group of girls is just starting to enjoy the process of writing letters and keeping a daily diary. Many sets are available that will include pens, stationary, stickers, and even a new diary.

Favorite Foods

Never doubt the power of candy or chocolate. No matter how mature these girls may be, everyone is a kid at heart when it comes to sweets. Pack your daughter's stocking with her favorite candies, gum, and chocolate bars.
Tween girls are at a fun age when mom and daughter can start connecting with similar topics. Use this Christmas to give your tween some fun things as stocking stuffers, and the two of you can have playing all day long.

For young fashion fans, the 1980s are back; '80s look in 'Hannah Montana' wardrobe

NEW YORK — As Miley Cyrus rocks out in the third season of "Hannah Montana," she channels Madonna circa 1985.
And, somehow, on this cute and playful 15-year-old, tiered miniskirts, leopard prints and fingerless gloves look good - so get ready for masses of mini-Montanas to emulate the look of the tween favourite, even if they are too young to know its true origin.
The look was created mostly for Cyrus's on-stage persona Hannah to wear, says costume designer Dalhia Foroutan, but hints of the '80s have crept into most of the cast's wardrobe.
The teenage stars are too young to remember ripped-neck sweatshirts or legwarmers the first time around, but they do recognize it as retro and think it's cool, she says.
Foroutan also works with Cyrus on her concert wardrobe and has also slipped in some intentional flashbacks from Madonna's "Lucky Star" and "Like a Virgin" days.
"I didn't like her (Madonna) so much in the '80s, but looking back, she was so new and different and she really influenced fashion in the '80s. I respect her for that," Foroutan says.
One of Madonna's great fashion legacies is that today's teens have adopted her well-crafted careless look.
"It's girlie, rocker, thrift shop. It says 'I don't care' but it took an hour to pile on and rip those fishnets. To anyone who knows anything about getting dressed, you knew it took a long time to put together, Foroutan says.
Cyrus says she's loving the style because there's a lot of room to put her own stamp on it - and if Cyrus wears it, so will countless others. (In the third quarter, "Hannah Montana" was the highest rated TV show for kids 6-11 and No. 2 for tweens 9-14, according to Nielsen Media Research provided by Disney Channel.)
"I can mix and match a cute shirt with some skinny jeans under a leather jacket and it looks fun and unique," Cyrus writes in an email to the AP. "That's why I love the signature leather gloves that are a part of the new Hannah look. I like to put my own style into what I wear mixed with something from the past."
It's probably not a coincidence that the '80s are back considering it's the mothers of millennials who wore highlighter-colour lace when they were coming of age.
The icons of the day include Olivia Newton John in her "Physical" gear, Molly Ringwald and "Flashdance's" Jennifer Beals.
Teen Vogue has shot a lot of outfits with this vibe already for spring, says fashion director Gloria Baume, and the magazine believes in it as a trend going forward. The runway shows of Marc by Marc Jacobs, DKNY and London's Christopher Kane furthered the return to the era of excess.
"I think the '80s were so maligned because it was a time of ostentatiousness, a time when everything was done to the top," Baume observes. "It was the first time for big gold chains and Rolexes, so much glitz and glamour. It represented what we think is bad taste today, while the '60s seemed more natural, spiritual. It was the '80s that led to the so minimal '90s."
Teens can learn from this to have fun with fashion and use it to express themselves.
But Baume also thinks this generation is simply more style savvy than those that came before it. "The '80s look is safe with these girls. They know too much to have the bad taste that we had ... these girls just don't have the bad taste in their DNA."
How to wear Hannah Montana's 1980s look
Some of the pieces that were cool for teens in the 1980s are cool again today.
Here's how to wear them for 2008:
-Keep things age-appropriate.
"Hannah Montana" costume designer Dahlia Foroutan recommends a tiered miniskirt and a top with volume, such as a puffy-sleeve shirt, and a wide belt. No high heels, she says, but ballet flats and Converse sneakers would look great.
And some '80s styles were too mature for teens - big shoulders and high necklines - even though girls wore them, Foroutan notes. In 2008, you'd be well advised to tone down some of that or risk looking more "Working Girl" than modern girl.
-Use what we learned the last time around.
A little bit of lace, chunky jewelry and especially those bright colours go a long way.
"A neon jacket with a miniskirt and a leopard belt? That's a no," says Gloria Baume, Teen Vogue fashion director.
-A look from the ages is not necessarily for all ages.
Foroutan warns you at least need a youthful spirit to pull off any of the looks. Without setting a hard age limit, you should take a second look in the mirror if you were old enough to wear to class a "Frankie Says Relax" T-shirt.
-Don't be so literal.
Even fashion designers struggle with the right balance when it comes to revisiting this decade. Baume's advice: "Always mix it with something classic, which is the unexpected. Don't put '80s with '80s. Put it with something prim and proper, or preppy

Tween podcast:: Smart Girls at the Party

Saturday Night Live Alum Amy Poehler just launched her latest project! Aimed at tweens, it is not a TV show, but a mobile podcast show!

The digital series "Smart Girls at the Party," is downloadable at Onnetworks.com. Each episode is a conversation between Poehler and a different girl, from a 10-year-old paranormal fiction writer to a young yoga expert.

The show features “extraordinary individuals who are changing the world by being themselves” says Poehler, who recently gave birth to a boy last month. The series was recorded in HD so it's just as watchable on a 3-inch screen as it is on a 46-incher.

Download the episodes free at www.smartgirlsattheparty.com and through syndication partners including iTunes, Adobe Media Player and other digital and mobile service providers.

Frugality is new trend in teen shopping

With the downturn in the economy exacerbated by rising unemployment, the financial sector meltdown and stock market volatility, consumers' confidence has hit rock bottom and their desire to spend is in a freeze mode. And with this happening just on the verge of retailers' critical holiday shopping season, some industry analysts predict this will be the worst season in at least 17 years.

The consumer "has changed," said Bob Shearer, chief financial officer of the top U.S. apparel company VF Corp. , in an interview. "It really didn't matter what income level you were. Consumers just become much more cautious. We are seeing that softening across the board."

One of the most telling signs about the widespread crack in the traditionally resilient consumer confidence can be found in the changing behavior of teens, a usually recession-proof demographic.

They also are going out and eating out less and said they are limiting the number of items they purchase as their part-time hours are cut back and parents are giving them less spending money. Teen retailers such as American Eagle Outfitters Inc. and Abercrombie & Fitch Co. have reported double-digit declines in sales at stores open at least a year.

"They've been cutting back on my hours," said 18-year-old William Restrepo from Jackson Heights, N.Y., referring to his delivery job. "I was out every day in the past. Now two or three times a week. No more. As soon as you are out, you are going to spend money."

The younger tween set, typically those between 8 and 12 who rely on their parents, also are learning their lessons.

"My mom goes straight to the sale racks" at Abercrombie and Hollister, said nine-year-old Tracy Imhof from Astoria, shopping at the Queens mall with her friend and mom.

She also received a new rule: If it's something that her mother thinks is frivolous, the money will have to come out of her pocket money.

"How many Abercrombie sweatshirts can she have?" said Susan McManus, Tracy's mother and a 51-year old nurse from Sunnyside, N.Y. "I tell her 'let's try to buy something that we really need.' I'm starting to worry. In the past, I usually pay for everything if she brings a friend, but not any more."

Donating Holiday Gifts for Teens is Rewarding

taken from Campbell times:

With the holidays less than two months away, one segment of the low income population that are often forgotten are the teens.

We often get toys for younger children and the teenagers are left out.

In California, a volunteer group called "Gift for teens" is doing just that---donating gifts to low income teenagers.

“Gifts for Teens is a wonderful experience,” said Benson, who is looking forward to the week long project of sorting and packing the items at Sacred Heart Community Service [SHCS]. “This project is so worthwhile and donations are key.”

Almaden’s Norma Faulkner is doing the same collecting makeup, nail polish stuffed animals, photo albums, and cosmetic bags for the teen girls’ bags.

“There’s a group of women who knits scarves and another who made 100 bead bracelets,” said Faulkner. “It’s very satisfying project to work on. The teens are often forgotten.”

After the donated items are received or purchased they are assembled at SHCS by the community and the sponsoring organization, the American Association of University Women [AAUW]-San Jose Branch volunteers. SHCS’s teen clients, as well as the Bill Wilson Center and EHC Lifebuilders are recipients of Gifts for Teens.

Jewelry Trends 2008-2009. Teen Jewelry Trends

As with clothing, jewelry trends come and go. The necklace or earrings style that's hot one year can look outdated the next. That's why it's a good idea to reassess your jewelry on a seasonal basis and fill in the gaps with some trendy new styles. Here are some of the best new jewelry trends for fall 2008/winter 2009 to keep you looking fashion forward and up to the minute:

Bracelets, bracelets, bracelets

The wrist will take on new importance this fall and winter and what better way to flatter an appendage than with a bold cuff bracelet. Though a large, unadorned cuff bracelet makes a statement on its own, cuffs sprinkled with stones and jewels of all types are also fabulous. These bold statement pieces will take your wrists from ordinary to extraordinary without spending a fortune. Feeling creative? Buy a plain cuff bracelet and decorate it with the stones and jewels of your choice.

Necklaces with drama

Look for an abundance of multi-strand necklaces and layering of strands to create a look that will take even the most ordinary outfit from fine to divine

Pendants
Look for oversized coins, medallions, and gemstone pendants to add to your collection. Although super large pendants were emphasized in all the fashion runway shows, there's still a place for smaller, more delicate pendants if bold isn't your style. Just make sure you have some!

Natural stones
The green movement has hit the jewelry world in a big way. You'll see a proliferation of natural beads and stones adorning all types of jewelry this fall and winter. Look for natural gemstones such as jade and turquoise to be a hit along with wood, bone, and freshwater pearls. These are the perfect pieces to be incorporated into the dramatic statement necklaces that will be so popular this fall.

With so many choices, almost anything goes for fall and winter 2009 jewelry. Have fun experimenting with the many choices! source

Should you allow your teen to buy designer jewelry

Excerpts from "Should you allow your teen to buy designer jewelry"
Parenting certainly has gotten a lot more complicated these days, especially when it comes to raising teenagers. Today’s teens are technologically savvy, sending text messages to friends all over the world, maintaining their own blogs, and in full command of their iPods.

Your daughter is knowledgeable about the internet as it is and probably is familiar with all of the quality websites that sell fashion jewelry at wholesale prices. Why not hold her to a budget and let her pick out what she wants? This will give to her an incentive to shop around and a math lesson too: just wait until she compares mall prices with what she can find on the James Allen website! You’ll be amazed at the savings online shopping can bring forth.

Truly, teen’s tastes are much more expensive than when we were young, but with a budget in place the bank doesn’t have to be busted by the purchase of something she may no longer wear next year. Besides, you want to reward her for helping you download songs to your iPod – why not give her something that she really wants in return? full article can be viewed here

Beauty Secrets for the Beach

you don't feel like baking in the sun but still want a nice tan, a self-tanning cream might be the solution. The Clarins Delicious Self Tanning Cream smells a little like chocolate liqueur - not something I particularly care for - but at least it's not such a strong chemical smell. The cream's caramel color will help you apply it evenly without missing a spot (you inevitably will, though, unless you're very, very experienced!). The cream contains a type of cocoa butter called "unsaponifiables," that supposedly prevents premature skin aging, and thanks to a dash of aloe vera, it feels moisturizing. I applied the cream only on my body, not on my face, though you can use it for both; the result was a real nice tan that lasts for about a week, after which you can reapply (or earlier, if you want a deeper tan).

If you still believe the simple application of a cream will cure your cellulite, try the new Elancyl Cellureverse. This slimming serum is supposed to tackle stubborn cellulite, and show results in just 14 days. The woman who hoped it would slim down her thighs a little reported it felt extremely pleasant, toned the skin, and absorbed quickly, but unfortunately didn't "remodel" the targeted areas. Cellureverse contains an extract of Sichuan pepper, which helps to burn fat; the serum smells refreshing, and the application feels pampering.

Instead of wearing stockings to cover up unsightly veins on your legs or hide their white color, you can try Giora Shavit's Perfect Cover, a cream that will provide a nice color, without all the chemicals. The cream washes off and works as a kind of makeup for your legs. A woman with some spider veins on her legs thought it was easy to use and covered up what she wanted to be hidden; at any rate, this is certainly a good alternative to wearing stockings during the hot summer months.
Sunleya Age Minimizing Sun Protection by Sisley is a face cream that supposedly enables the skin to protect itself from the sun's rays. The cream filters UV-rays, and it contains ingredients that reflect the light. The white cream rubs in easily without leaving a white layer on the skin, and smells deliciously of certain herbs, such as rosemary. You should apply it half an hour before exposure to the sun, and reapply every two hours.

New sunscreen products from Dr. Fischer this year are a spray for kids containing SPF 30, which is fun to apply because it is blue when sprayed on the skin. After rubbing it in, the blue color disappears; 200 ml. is NIS 80. Another novelty is a sunscreen gel for men; the reason why men need something specifically for them is that their bodies are hairier and therefore it is harder to rub in the cream (which makes sense, at least for some men). The gel is easier to apply and absorbs right away.
DSM, which stands for Dead Sea Minerals, has some relatively cheap sunscreens that offer a sun protection factor from 15 to 45, with prices ranging from NIS 30 to NIS 38 for a 250-ml. bottle. More expensive, but delicious to use and suitable for sensitive skin is the Avène spray with a sun protection factor of 20;
Specifically for hands, which also need good protection in order to avoid brown spots, Crêma has a cream called Daily Sun Defender, enriched with vitamin E, and containing an SPF of 15

A summer blanket that looks attractive in your bedroom and feels wonderfully light and soft is the Formesse blanket, made with the climate-control fabric Tencel, and with aloe vera in the upper part. The blankets only come in single-size format,

To cheer up your bedroom and bathroom, Vardinon has some beautiful items in the summer collection; for example the Juliet model beige or off-white towels with roses embroidered on the edge. The quality of the Vardinon towels is good, and they hold up well after many, many washes.

another great way to accessorize yourself on the beach is with the personalized flip flops of Big Baby. at www.big-baby.com you will find affordable personalized flip flops and so much more!

Grill Basics
To keep food from sticking, brush it with olive oil or vegetable oil before placing it on the grill. For extra protection, brush the grill with oil or spray with nonstick cooking spray before heating.
Grill with the top closed to retain heat and decrease cooking time. Use tongs to turn meat or skewers as a fork punctures the food and allows juices to escape.
Before serving, always let meat rest so juices can be absorbed; burgers should rest about 2 – 4 minutes.
When serving corn on the cob, be sure to set out Butter Babies so your guests can keep their hands and clothes clean.

Fun at the beach survival kit

Fun at the beach survival kit
If you live near a beach, whether it be the ocean or a lake, spending time at the shore is a great way to enjoy time with your kids -- and keep away the boredom bug. If you don't live near the water, but are planning a vacation to the beach, here are some must-haves!

Sunscreen savvy

This is probably the most important item in your beach bag. Make sure you have sufficient sunscreen protection for yourself and your children. The sun's ultraviolet rays are at their strongest during the hours of 10 am and 4 pm, so limit your time in the sun during those hours.Choose a sunscreen lotion that is at the very least 15 SPF, more appropriate for children is an SPF of 30 or more. Be sure to adequately apply the sunscreen to all exposed skin, including ears, nose and neck. Speak to your doctor about sunscreen and babies under six months of age.Don't forget your lips! Bring along sun protective lip balm with an SPF of 15 or more. An aloe-based after-sun lotion is a great way to soothe your skin after a day in the sun so apply after your day at the beach.
Protective barriers

Sunglasses that block ultraviolet rays, sun hats with brims, and beach umbrellas are all wonderful items to have along for added protection. Babies under six months old should wear protective clothing, a brimmed sun hat and if possible, baby sunglasses that protect from harmful UV rays. Babies should not spend a lot of time in the sun, but if they are, keep them protected! A first aid kit with bandages, an antibiotic cream and other essentials is an excellent idea as well.
Chairs and blanket

There are chairs made specifically for the beach, they sit low to the ground and fold up neatly, often they include a handy shoulder strap. Don't count on the beach having chairs for its guests! A blanket is another nice thing to bring along. Not only is it comfortable to sit on, but it's a welcome comfort from the hot sand on bare feet.
Sand and water toys

Kids love digging and building in the sand, it's a must for a beach visit. There is a huge variety of toys on the market made specifically for water play. Nerf balls and lightweight canvas Frisbee discs are great because they float and often come in neon colors so they can be seen easily.Don't forget the standard shovels and pails, sand diggers and sand sifters, all which are great for building sand castles, sifting for shells and rocks and pouring water into makeshift motes. Bring along a plastic jar to collect shells. A butterfly or small fishing net can be loads of fun for catching small minnows near lake shorelines! Let's not forget the old beach standby, the beach ball. Squirting water toys are also a blast and can keep the kids busy for hours. Goggles and water masks are great, but can be easily lost in the water. Be sure to bring along extras! There are hundreds of different kinds of beach and water toys, bring along what your family will enjoy.
Floatation devices

Most public beaches do not allow items such as floating rafts, noodles, or "arm floaties" as they are not Coast Guard-approved swim or safety wear. Check with your beach lifeguards or town officials to see what they will or will not allow. Coast Guard-approved life jackets are welcome and recommended for young swimmers, even those who have recently learned to swim, for safety purposes. Many beaches offer free loaner lifejackets, or they offer them for a nominal fee.
Extra towels

Bring towels along for each member of your family. Bringing along an extra or two cannot hurt, especially of little Timmy decides to take his into the water with him!
Water and snacksBeing in the sun can quickly dehydrate you. Bring along bottled water, enough for everyone in your family. Check with your beach and see if coolers are allowed so that you can keep it nice and cold. If your beach does allow coolers, this is a great way to save money on snacks. Instead of buying from the beach concession stand, bring along fresh fruit, pretzels, cold sandwiches and carrot sticks.
Extra clothing

Bringing along an extra T-shirt or pair of shorts is not a bad idea. If your beach trip will continue on into the evening, bring a windbreaker or sweat jacket for everyone, just in case the temperature dips down. Be sure that everyone has adequate footwear -- swim shoes are a great idea as well, especially for rocky beaches.
Preserving memories

Don't forget your camera! You can purchase waterproof disposable cameras to capture all of those sunny moments. Inexpensive one-time-use cameras are also available for underwater use!
Your beach survival kit
Now that you are ready to head off to the beach, here's a summarization of everything we have suggested. Check each item off to see if you are ready to roll!

Keeping Cool in the Summer

Summer can be a wonderful time. However, to some it may not be as pleasant. Some people live in very hot climates, without the benefit of air conditioning, and dread the coming of the heat.
There may be problems in the US this year because of the energy crisis and expense of running air conditioners.. I personally lived in Arizona without central air. It was miserable!
With that in mind, here are a few ideas to keep cooler this summer.
*If you live in a dry climate, a swamp cooler, or evaporative cooler will help. It doesn't cost as much to run as air conditioning. Unfortunately, it doesn't work well when it gets humid.
These units usually sit on the top of your house. You can also buy portable models (They are often erroneously labeled air conditioners) . These units run air over water and then blow it out. It can be refreshing. When you can't afford air conditioning, this is your best option.
You can get some of the effects of a swamp cooler by just turning on the hose and running it back and forth outside your window. However, it may waste water, another problem.
*Fans that circulate air are essential if it is very hot. Buy an oscillating fan, or one that moves around so that you get the greatest amount of air circulation possible. If it is very hot, you may just want to sit in front of it and let it blow right on you. This is effective, but you must be careful your eyes don't dry out. Either way, for the best results, buy a large fan.
*If you have a basement, be prepared to use it. It is usually 10 degrees cooler than the rest of the house. Have something to do down there.
*Do not cook in your home or do anything that creates heat. Once you put heat in your home, it is hard to get rid of. Make sandwiches, buy something, or use the barbecue. Take your crockpot outside and plug it in to an outside circuit if you have a safe place to put it.
Keep lights off, and any thing else that creates heat. Anything that plugs in may be generating heat keeping on various systems in the unit. Do the "touch test" around your home. Anything that feels warm, unplug it.
*Drink plenty of water. Eat Popsicles and other cool items. Be careful about drinking anything too cold. It will be too much of a shock for your body.
*Water will cool you off. Many people keep a small pool outside for the kids, let them run through the sprinklers, or just hose themselves off when they get hot. It works for adults also!
*Wear clothes that breathe. Cotton is wonderful. Do not wear anything synthetic. Keep your shoes off, and tie your hair up.
*Leave your home during the hottest part of the day. Go shopping, or visit a building that is air conditioned. If you have shade outside, sit outside and just rest. If it is very hot, you won't have the energy to do much else. Don't beat yourself up because you aren't accomplishing anything. When it is hot, your body is lethargic. Don't push it.
*If it just doesn't cool off at night, think about sleeping in a hammock. When it is VERY hot, a bed can feel like sleeping on a grill. In many parts of the world, the only way people can sleep at night is in a hammock outside.
*When you consider home improvement, consider installing fans and air vents in your attic. A well insulated attic with good air flow will keep the temperature lower in the whole house. A ceiling fan will keep cooled air down low where you need it.
*A well placed deciduous tree will provide shade and lower the temperature in your home. It will drop it's leaves in winter, and let the sun in.

SUMMER PARTY TIPS

Summer is the easiest season to entertain. Parties are expected to be casual, seasonal produce is abundant and inexpensive, and nature does the decorating for you. Remember to follow these important tips, and your summer parties are destined for success.
1. Always Have Plenty of Ice!Never underestimate how quickly the ice will be used during a summer party. Even if the party is inside, guests are still feeling the heat of the summer day and requiring lots of cooling ice.

2. You Can't Overestimate How Many Beverages You'll NeedFrom soft drinks to beer to blender drinks, there's never enough in the summer. Whether your guests are simply walking outside and chatting, or playing an energetic game of volleyball, they'll work up a stronger thirst than they do in the other three seasons. Include bottled water in your beverage arsenal. Sometimes nothing does the trick like a nice icy glass of H2O. Place a bucket of fruit filled ice cubes on the side to add a little extra pizzazz.

3. Lighten Up Your MenuUse as many fresh, seasonal ingredients in your menu as possible. As thirsts increase during the summer, appetites for heavy recipes shrink. Opt for salads and grilled food in place of stews and casseroles. Not only will your guests welcome the seasonal change, you'll find it's much quicker and cooler to prepare this food in the hot weather.

4. Keep Your Party Goods Casual and ColorfulThere's no need to drag your expensive place settings outside. Take the opportunity to use inexpensive melamine and other plastic materials. If you don't own any, it pays over the long haul to invest in a sturdy set of summer dinnerware. Colorful dishes help to create a festive mood, it's cheaper than buying disposables if you host a lot of summer parties, and it's better for the environment!

5. Remind Your Guests that the Party is Dress CasualUnless you're hosting a wedding or some other formal event, nobody wants to wear fussy clothing in the summer. So give your guests permission to wear funky, colorful cottons and sassy summer sandals.

6. Provide Shelter from the SunIf you're hosting a daytime party outside, provide your guests with options for escaping from the sun. Whether it's a rented tent, chairs placed under a shady tree, or tables with umbrellas, your guests will appreciate a place to escape from the heat.

7. Take Your Party on the RoadDo you have a local beach that permits private parties? How about a park or pool club? Change the venue and watch your crowd loosen up with the change of scenery.

8. Remember Food SafetyAlways keep cold food cold and hot food hot. Summer heat quickly turns good food into a stomach disaster if not served under correct conditions.

9. Serve Ice Cream Sundaes and Cookies for DessertThe cookies can be prepared (or purchased) in advance and sundaes are a favorite make-your-own-dessert. Who doesn't love this combo?

10. Provide Personal Conveniences Your Guests May Have ForgottenHey, it's hard to remember everything when you're looking forward to having a good time! So offer your guests sunscreen, bug spray, flip flops, towels, and even hand sanitizers if you're partying away from home.

And for your party favors go to www.big-baby.com, prices are affordable and the selection is huge!

What is the significance of a pendant? A pendant is a decoration and symbolization of the things that a person treasures. A favorite past time, a special person, a milestone affair, or something that describes you are just a few ideas of pendants to display on a necklace.
Pendants are great gift ideas, acknowledging a friend or family member’s interests. To consider what kind of pendants you can give a loved one, here are some ideas of how you can celebrate some of the things that they treasure most.

Your Guide to FLIP FLOPS!!!

In footwear and fashion, flip-flops (also known as thongs, jandals or pluggers) are a flat, backless, usually rubber sandal consisting of a flat sole held loosely on the foot by a Y-shaped strap, like a thin thong, that passes between the first (big) and second toes and around either side of the foot. They appear to have been developed based on traditional Japanese woven or wooden soled sandals.
The flip-flop is not the only type of thong sandal. Other types exist, many of which are dressier and more formal than simple flip-flops. A basic thong sandal is held on the foot by a strip that fits between the first and second toes and is connected to a strap usually passing over the top or around the sides of the foot. Some thong sandals have a strap that forms a loop around the first (big) toe. However, many different additions and variations of straps are possible. Thong sandals come in a variety of styles such as women's heels, slides, and wedges, or kitten heels.
Flip-flops have a style of their own, different from other types of shoes. These dressier versions of the thong sandal are often made of leather, suede, patent leather, metallic finishes, fabric and other textiles. Based upon prevailing fashion, they are sometimes embellished with buckles, jewelry, fringes, medallions and beading. In their more formal incarnations, thong sandals are interchangeable with any other dressy sandal, and are often worn as dress shoes. The term "flip-flop" is not generically used to describe this dressier style of thong sandal.
Because of the popularity of thong sandals as dress shoes, hosiery manufacturers make hose (stockings) with a gap between the first toe and second toes to accommodate the thong.

Flip-flops are a very basic type of footwear — essentially a thin rubber sole with two simple straps running in a Y from the sides of the foot to the join between the big toe and next toe. Popular use of flip-flops as simple warm climate beach or outdoor wear has spread through much of the world, although it is most common in Australia, New Zealand, California and Florida (USA), Brazil, the Pacific Islands, and Southeast Asia.
In most developing countries, rubber flip-flops are the cheapest footwear available – typically less than $1, and many measures are used to reduce cost, such as making them out of recycled tires [1]. Because of this, they are very widely used in these countries as typical footwear instead of a fashion statement. Despite their disposable design, street vendors will repair worn sandals for a small fee.
Flip-flops are very economic shoes not just in developing countries, but also in countries such as the US. They are generally very cheap, and made to be disposable. The strap between the toes can snap very easily after moderate use, but this problem was somewhat alleviated with the invention of replacement straps that could be "snapped" back into place on a shoe. Still, the average life expectancy of a pair is perhaps only a year or so, not counting the strap, depending on the material make-up of the soles.
Flip flops are also popular with barefooters [1] when they have to wear shoes since they allow the foot to be out in the open but still constitute a shoe, and can be quickly and easily removed. They are also popular because they are easy to carry.

Northwestern Women's Lacrosse team at the White House. Four of the women in the front row are wearing thong sandals that were labeled "flip-flops" by critics.
On July 19, 2005, some members of Northwestern University's national champion women's lacrosse team were criticized for wearing "flip-flops" to the White House to meet with President George W. Bush. Although the women pointed out that their shoes were not "beach shoes," but were dressier thong sandals, many weighed in on this fashion choice. Those adding to the controversy included Meghan Cleary, a footwear expert, who stated that a closed-toe shoe would have been more appropriate. Cleary noted on MSNBC's Connected: Coast to Coast program as saying the flip-flop flap indicated a cultural shift similar to when blue jeans were first worn in public. The Northwestern Women's Lacrosse Team auctioned off the thong sandals worn to the White House to raise money for a 10 year-old girl with a brain tumor. [2][3]
In Japan and Korea, where it is common to leave shoes outside the house and the use of squat toilets is common, flip-flops are typically provided to wear while using the toilet.
The use of flip-flops has also been encouraged in some branches of European and North American military as sanitary footwear in communal showers, where wearing flip-flops slows the spread of fungal infections. Following on from this, some soldiers and other trampers or hikers have begun carrying flip-flops, or a pair of flip-flop soles sewn to socks, or as a lightweight emergency replacement for damaged boots.[citation needed]
The Indian manifestation of the flip-flop, the chappal, has even been known to be deployed as a weapon, both as a truncheon and a missile, although it is more commonly merely a threat. It is not unheard of for people to whip off their chappals in the heat of an argument, in order to make their aggravation more palpable to the other party. (Touching the shoes or feet of another, in some Indian cultures, is a sign of respect or submission).
Flip-flops were inspired by the traditional woven soled zōri or "Japanese Sandals", (hence "jandals"). Woven Japanese zōri had been used as beach wear in New Zealand in the 1930s [2]. In the post war period in both New Zealand and America, versions were briefly popularized by servicemen returning from occupied Japan. The idea of making sandals from plastics did not occur for another decade.
The modern design was purportedly invented in Auckland, New Zealand by Morris Yock in the 50's and patented in 1957. However, this claim has recently been contested by the children of John Cowie who say that Morris Yock was no more than an importer, and John Cowie truly pioneered the conversion of the Japanese sandal from traditional woven materials to plastic. For the original article see [4].
Despite being commonly used (in New Zealand) to describe any manufacturer's Jandals, the word Jandal has been a trademark since 1957, for a long time owned by the Skellerup company. At one point a competitor sold Jandels.
In countries other thanNew Zealand, jandals are known by other names. For example, thongs, in Australia, where the first pair were manufactured by Skellerup rival Dunlop in 1960 (thongs being popularized when worn by the Australian Olympic swimming team at the Melbourne Olympic Games of 1956), or flip-flops (UK and US).
In New Zealand, the phrase "to handle the jandal" is a common idiom. As an example, Ben can't handle the jandal indicates that the subject, Ben, is incapable of dealing with his particular situation.
Flip flops now come in a variety of shoe styles other than the traditional flat sandal, such as women's heels, slides, and wedges.
The shoes gained popularity as celebrities started wearing them and high end designers started producing them. Designer Sigerson Morrison first added a kitten heel to flip flops.

Health concerns

While widely regarded to be comfortable, flip-flops provide little to no ankle support, and are responsible for many foot related issues. Dr. John E. Mancuso, a podiatrist at the Manhattan Podiatry Associates in New York, pointed out[citation needed] that some flip-flops have a spongy sole, so when the foot hits the ground, it rolls inward and the sponge allows it to roll even more than usual. This is known as pronation and causes many problems in the foot. Each time a foot hits the ground, the arch is supposed to be locked to absorb shock. But during pronation, the arch opens and releases this locking mechanism, leading to problems such as pain in the heel, the arch, the toes and in the forefoot. Overpronation of the foot also results in flat feet, especially if flip flops are worn throughout childhood and adolesence when the muscles, bones, and tendons of the feet are growing and developing. Exacerbating this, some flip-flops force a person to overuse the tendons in the foot, which can cause tendinitis.
Many people[who?] believe that the pronation of the foot is meant to be left un-controlled. The arch is supposed to flex downward to absorb shock, rather than the arch being locked. This is proven only by a degree of neutral runners as it can be contradicted that over or under-pronation can lead to more health problems other than strengthening the foot.
The need to control the pronation or supinaton of the foot is currently being questioned. [3]
Ankle sprains are also common due to stepping off a curb or stepping wrong; the ankle bends, but the flip flop neither holds on to nor supports it. The open nature of flip-flops also makes the wearer more susceptible to stubbed toes, and exposes the foot to the environment. The toe grip can be useful for preventing the foot from slipping forward in a convenient sandal, but flip flops with bands across higher areas of the foot or the arch are recommended for support and keeping the shoe on the foot. Thong sandals are also popular with the same proportions and structures of flip flops, but with the addition of a slingback or an ankle strap that holds and supports the foot in a stable position. Arch support is also found in many more expensive and better made flip flops rather than the ubiquitous foam materials. Spending more on a better quality, better created shoe can influence the wearers health and safety. They are also more commonly endowed with rubberized soles and better cushions.
The term flip-flop can also refer to any backless sandals so that they "flip and flop."

About Bead Work, or, Make Your Own Beaded Jewelry with BIg Baby's Ceramic Beads

Freeform Beading is one of the most relaxing, enjoyable beading methods I know. Once the beaded base is established, you're free to add all the fun little extra beads including your focal, if you want a focal, or Swarovski crystals, vintage beads, beaded flowers, or just about any type of bead or bit of beadwork you can think of.

Freeform Peyote Stitch Beading is also great for those of you for whom following a pattern is a challenge, artistically or visually. I have trouble with both the visual and the artistic aspect. Perhaps if it were easier for me visually, I wouldn't get so fidgety. Color, texture, balance, scale and fun are the most important aspects of freeform beading, and this week I'll begin a freeform project just to show one in action, from picking the beads (well, they are picked, but I'll show you the choices) through each of the steps to the finished bracelet. I'll do that by posting periodic here in the Beadwork Blog.I will also return to an older project, one I began as a Freeform Beading experiment using beads and colors that are Not My Usual Bead Color Palette and are very different from my normal color choices and in shapes I do not normally incorporate into my beading. The colors are maroon, mustard and charcoal, the focal beads are handmade in Greece from a company called The Mykonos Beads and are from their collection of Raku finish beads. Since my last post about this project, I also found some wool bass in the same shades as the three I'm using, and will incorporate those, too. This will be a fun, interesting project in working outside the usual parameters for me! I hope you enjoy following along. Oh, and please, feel free to offer any comments along the way. Later today or Tuesday I'll post a better picture of the Not My Usual project, so you can get a better look at the colors involved.

For the best beads for your hobby and more go to www.big-baby.com the selection is huge and lots to choose from in affordable price. these are not your ordinary beads, our ceramic beads can be used for several types; birthday parties, charity and so much more!

Homemade Lip Gloss Recipe - How to Make Your Very Own Flavored Lip Balm

Little girls as well as adult women love flavored lip- gloss. It is fun to apply and has a great taste. I especially like the shine. It's great to wear on those days when you don't want to wear makeup, just slap on the lip-gloss and you are off. The different flavors are the best part of the lip-gloss. Another great thing is making your own. Using a flavored lip-gloss kit found on Martha Stewarts "Good Living" website you can make it in any flavor you want. You can combine the many essential oils creating delicious new unique flavors. The kit provides you with 5 bottles of essential oils. They are the essential oils of lime, lemon, tangerine, grapefruit, or peppermint. The kit also includes 12 empty plastic pots, empty plastic tubes, and pots of beeswax. You can customize a basic recipe with your pot of unscented oil and wax. You will also need to use:A thin-tipped marker, Cooking pot and stove, Measuring spoons, Paper cup, Paper towels, Lipstick A utility knife. It is a good idea to begin by hand washing all mixing jars, plastic tubes, and plastic pots. Dry them thoroughly. Set aside two pipettes to measure the essential oil. A pipette, acts like a baster, drawing the oil or lip balm up inside. Use the remaining pipettes to stir the lip balm, and transfer it to the tubes and pots. To get a glossy lip balm, add an extra 1½-teaspoon of sunflower or safflower oil. Fill the pot with 1" of water, and bring to a boil; lower the heat to medium. Combine teaspoons of the beeswax beads and 5 teaspoons sunflower or safflower oil in a mixing jar, and set the jar into the pot; the water should be below the rim of the jar. Stir the mixture using the pipette; the wax will begin to immediately melt. After it is thoroughly mixed, add the preferred oil one drop at a time. I recommend limiting the total number of 10 drops to prevent an overpowering scent. You can experiment with the assorted oils provided you wash the pipette with warm water before adding different oils.

For an added touch, add lipstick shavings from old discarded lipsticks, directly to the mixing jar until you reach desired color you like. When you are satisfied with the scent and color of the balm, use a clean pipette to fill the tubes and pots. Caution; lip balm is hot. Fill each container to the rim. Allow lip balm to settle for a few minutes, after filling tubes then add a final drop. The extra drop helps to prevent holes that can form in the center. Leave the lip balm to set for 20 minutes before you replace the lids. Return it to the boiling water to melt if lip balm hardens inside glass mixing jar. Discard all pipettes; pour any leftover lip balm into a paper cup before disposing of it. Use a paper towel to wipe lip balm from inside the mixing jar; if the lip balm has hardened in the jar, return it to the boiling water to melt before wiping it off. Hand-wash the mixing jar with soap and hot water. Now you can enjoy your very own flavored lip balm. You can also create pretty colors with unusual patterns with your essential oils for your very own extra special lip balm. To make a bull's-eye, fill a pot with lip balm, and allow it to set for at least 20 minutes. Once it is set, press a cap from one of the plastic tubes open-side down into the middle of the pot. Twist and remove the cap; a round chunk of lip balm should come away in the cap. Add another color of melted lip balm into the hole, flush with the first color, and let it harden. To make a striped design, use the utility knife and fill one pot with one color of lip balm and allow it to set. Once it has hardened cut four parallel lines through the lip balm. Put a second color of melted lip balm into the empty slot you've made until it is lever with the first color, and all to set. I have made lemon-lime flavored and lemon-orange lip-gloss. Lemon peppermint as well as grapefruit-peppermint do not go together. Do not attempt this combination or you will find yourself unkissable. Trust me. Please let me know in the comment box below if you have the Martha Stewart kit and have created unusual ideas for original lip-gloss flavors.

How to Throw a B-Day party for your Teen and Tween

Is your tween daughter into fashion? Do they like trying on new clothes, accessories and shoes? Do they like to create their own outfits? If you've answered "yes" to these questions, then you daughter is most likely a little fashionista. Throwing a party for the tween who has a passion for all things fashion can be easy and fun. Here's how.

Fashion Party Invitations

One of the first steps of planning a tween fashion birthday party is to create/purchase the birthday party invitations. While you can purchase birthday invitations perfect for your fashion party, it would be more fun to create your own fashionable cards with your tween girl. The first idea for creating your own tween fashion birthday party invitations would be to use magazine clippings, glue, and card stock. Have your tween daughter clip out shirts, pants, skirts, and dresses from old magazines. Your tween can cut out pictures of clothing or cut clothing shapes out of patterned and colorful magazine pictures. Have your tween daughter glue on their cut out outfits onto the front of the invitation and then draw the body parts, such as the head, arms, and legs.Using cardstock trace out a pattern in the shape of purses to form the base for your tween fashion birthday party invitations and decorate. You can add glitter to the edges of your paper purses to add some glam to your homemade purse invitations. You can also use stick on jewels to jazz up your party invitations. Write the details of your party on the back of each purse and have your tween daughter hand the invitations out to her friends. Alternatively, you could write the details of the party on the front of the purse and attach a stick of lip gloss, a plastic bracelet, or other fashion accessories on the back of the party invitation.

Costume Jewelry

Costume jewelry can be purchased inexpensively and can be the perfect "accessory" for your tween's fashionable birthday party. You can purchase costume jewelry at second hand stores, your local dollar store, a craft store, and even at party stores. You can set up a bowl filled with costume jewelry beside the front door so that your birthday party guests can pick and choose their own fashion accessories to wear during the party. Another way to incorporate costume jewelry at your tween's fashion birthday party is to set up gift bags on a table along with bowls of costume jewelry. Allow each guest to select a certain amount of costume jewelry each to take home with them. Make Your Own JewelryMake your own jewelry kits are widely available at your local retail stores and craft stores and very popular with fashion loving tween girls. Tween girls are at the age where party games may be a bit childish to play at their birthday party. To entertain the tweens at your tween's birthday party create a jewelry making station for the party guests to create their own works of art. If you are hosting a larger party create several stations, make each jewelry station unique by offering different jewelry at each station. For example, you can set up a station for making necklaces, a station for making bracelets, and a station for making earrings. Another way of using the make your own jewelry kits is to have each tween guest make a piece of jewelry for another guest. You can find make your own friendship bracelet kits which would be perfect for this idea.

Makeovers

Makeovers can be a fun way to entertain your guests at your tween's fashion birthday party. Make sure it is alright for each of your tween guests to wear make-up at your tween's birthday party by asking for their parent's permission. You can create one station or several stations for your tween guests to receive a complete makeover. To create a Make-Up station at your tween's fashion birthday party set a chair next to an end table. Make sure to have a different make-up kit for each guest. Kits can include items such as lip gloss, body glitter, and/or eye shadow. Allow your tween guests to bring their make-up kits home with them after the party for use later on.

Create another station at your tween's fashion birthday party for performing hair makeovers for your tween guests. Hang a mirror on the wall in your party area and set a chair in front of it. Set up a table beside the chair filled with hair brushes, combs, and hair accessories to perform your hair makeovers with. Offer your tween guests a hairstyle magazine to flip through to come up with ideas for a hairstyle they'd like to try.The last station of your makeover area for your tween's fashion birthday party should be a manicure/pedicure station. Offer your tween guests a variety of nail polish colors to choose from. Your tween guests can paint each other's nails or you can paint their nails for them. Make sure to keep a bottle of nail polish remover handy for any slip ups.

Fashion RunwayAnother fun activity for your tween's fashion birthday party is hosting a runway show. Ask each guest to bring several of their favorite outfits to your tween's fashion birthday party in order to participate in a fashion runway show. You can set up the runway stage in a hallway in your home. Hang curtains at one end of the hallway for the tween girls to enter and exit through during the runway show. Have each tween guest take turns walking down the runway wearing one of their outfits. To finish the runway show have your tween daughter come out last wearing a crown and decked out in a pretty party dress. A fashionable birthday party may be the perfect way to celebrate your tween girl's birthday. Using the ideas above your tween will have a good time with her friends at her fashion birthday party.
